The generations

Wi-Fi has generations, each faster and better than the last:

The bands

Wi-Fi broadcasts on different radio bands, and understanding them helps:

  • 2.4 GHz. Better range, slower, more crowded. Good for distance and smart home devices.
  • 5 GHz. Faster, shorter range, less crowded. Good for speed-sensitive devices (streaming, gaming).
  • 6 GHz. Newest (Wi-Fi 6E/7), fastest and least crowded, but shortest range.

    Your router broadcasts on bands. 2.4 GHz travels farther but is slower and more crowded; 5 GHz is faster with less range โ€” best for speed-sensitive devices; 6 GHz (newer) is fastest but shortest-range. Use 5/6 GHz for speed, 2.4 GHz for range.

    What to choose

    Here's how to use this understanding when buying a router:

  • Look for dual-band or tri-band. Dual-band (2.4 + 5 GHz) is standard; tri-band adds more capacity.
  • Prefer Wi-Fi 6 as the current sweet spot (see our guide).
  • Match to your devices. Your devices need to support a standard to get its full benefit.
  • Consider your home. For large homes, add a mesh system (see our router guide).
  • Don't overpay. Wi-Fi 6 dual-band is plenty for most homes; you rarely need Wi-Fi 7.
  • โœจ Use the right band for the right device

    For the best performance, connect speed-sensitive devices (streaming, gaming) to the 5 GHz band and leave 2.4 GHz for range and smart devices. Many routers handle this automatically with band steering, but knowing the difference helps you troubleshoot (see our network guide).
